"Great black and white photographers, PART 2."
Manuel Alvarez Bravo,
He used large cameras which produced more detail in the finished print.
However, he was more concerned with the images he photographed than the
technical quality of his prints. The compositions were generally
excellent and the images poetic, He gave titles to his photographs in order to distinguish them. The
titles of his photographs often are based on Mexican myth and culture.
He was born on February 4, 1902 , in Mexico City , and died on October 19, 2002. He studied art at the Academy of San Carlos , His hallmark as a photographer was to capture images of the ordinary but in ironic or surrealistic ways , based on European influences, but then he got in to Mexican muralism, movement and the general cultural and political push at the time to redefine Mexican identity.

The camera
1. Explain the " camera obscura" effect. How is it achieved?
_The effect came to be known as the "camera obscura" which is Latin for "dark room". This was the first camera. The hole acted like a lens, focusing and projecting light onto the wall of the dark chamber.
Inside a completely dark room, a tiny hole is created in one wall. Through the hole light is focused, and the outside scene is projected (upside down) on the opposite wall.
2. What invention during the 17th Century helped man get a step closer to creating the modern camera?
_In the 17th century, the modern camera came one step closer when Isaac Newton and Christian Huygens perfected the understanding of optics and the process of making high quality glass lenses.
3. What were the parts of the first modern camera invented by Niepce?
_He added *film* to create the first successful photograph, and the modern camera was born:
A glass lens, a dark box, and film.
4.What do modern digital cameras have in common with Niepce’s camera?
_A digital camera is still composed of a lens, a dark box, and film.
5. What do digital cameras use to capture an image?
_Replacing old-fashioned plastic film, digital cameras capture the images with an electronic sensor called a CCD.

Aperture,
In optics, an aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. More specifically, the aperture of an optical system is the opening that determines the cone angle of a bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane.
Shutter ,
A photographic device that administers the exposure by limiting the time over which light is admitted.
Exposure ,
In photography, exposure is the amount of light allowed to fall on each area unit of a photographic medium during the process of taking a photograph .
Depth of field,
depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest objects in a scene that appear acceptably sharp in an image.
F-stop,
In optics the f-number (sometimes called focal ratio, f-ratio, f-stop, or relative aperture) of an optical system is the ratio of the lens's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil .
Focal length
The focal length of an optical system is a measure of how strongly the system converges or diverges light.
